Ofcourse it will go open source...
In the year 25 25, when MMO's are still alive, when NCSoft made a dive... etc.
On a more serious note, I don't think they will release the source code to the public any time soon, no matter what happens.

I have to point out that no mmo that "died/failed" released their source codes.
Closest any non dev was to source code of commercial mmo was when EVE client sources leaked (or were decompiled?).

Anet said they'd go open source when they close down GW servers, so don't expect it to happen at the release of GW2.

I like how the OP took the liberty of putting [Grand Discussion] in front of the title only to have 3 pages of discussion on it...
Also, probably won't happen.

Look at Lineage I and Lineage II. Guild Wars will totally not go open source after GWII's arrival.
It will EVENTUALLY go open source, but I wouldn't expect anything like that until years after GWII's opening.

Thread necromancy is only really applicable when the topic is no longer relevant or the question has "expired." We actually encourage users to post in existing topics unless either has occurred.
In any case, open sourcing the GW server seems unlikely to me. Parts of it may have been created, used, or licensed from other companies, and parts of it may be planned to be sold or licensed to other companies in the future.
As I understand it, the way the server handles data and interacts with the client is supposed to be highly optimized, which is why the associated costs are low enough to not need a monthly fee. That might be worth something.
Additionally, GW2 is born from the GW1 chapter, Utopia, if I remember correctly. Unveiling the innermost workings of the GW1 servers could make vulnerabilities in the GW2 servers more readily apparent.
And then, of course, the HoM tie-in.
I doubt GW1 ever moves to open source.

Kings of Chaos has. It's a text-based MMO and there's quite a few spurtoffs that are extremely successful. StarGateWars being a nameable one.

actually, the second-life client is gpl. and linden labs hasn't had any problems with it, so i don't see why the gw or gw2 client couldn't be open sourced as well. and you know there'd be people willing to port the thing to any and all operating systems

I have always felt that they should link the servers so that people from GW1 could go to GW2. It doesn't make much sense how you would transfer the weapons from HoM account to account using a new server... why would the developers spend all that time recording the items that people have? It has to be a linked server or possibly a modified server.
They might make a modified server and import all the data and such there and have it share with GW2

I don't care about it going open source but I would like to have a LAN version of it so I can continue to play (or get away from an ANET controlled server).

Open source = the source code of a program can be downloaded, tinkered with and compiled by everybody. Various terms and conditions may still apply.

Does that mean you don't have to go online to play ??
Does that you can modify the game, skills, armor... ??

Theoretically. If you can create a server for the game - remembering that you weren't given the source for that, so you'd have to start from scratch - you could rig it so you didn't have to go online to play. This would obviously mean you could modify whatever you felt like.
As for modifying skills/items on official servers, probably not. Most of that's stored on ArenaNet's servers.
